The Weight of Words” Project Challenges Stigma Around Obesity in Rome

Rome, 24 September 2025 – The message from a new awareness project in Rome is clear: stop the stigma and discrimination against people living with obesity.

The initiative, titled “Body, Stereotypes, and Prejudices: The Weight of Words,” was launched by La Mattina Dopo Odvat Teatro Ghione. The event brought together institutions, experts, and citizens to discuss how language can support dignity, fairness, and social unity. It was sponsored by the City of Rome’s Department of Social PoliciesEl Italian Federation of Obesity Associations (FIAO)El Italian Diabetics Association (FAND)y un Radio DJ.

The Rome event is the first in a series, with three more sessions planned in schools across Italy.

“Today’s initiative is a great opportunity to send a message about the weight of words,” said Eligio Linoci, President of La Mattina Dopo ODV and Vice President of FIAO.

“Language can hurt, but it can also be a tool for awareness and change. It is up to us to choose how to use it. This event reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting all people and families affected by this disease, ensuring that no one is left behind.”

The project was created to encourage people to think about how language shapes the way we see ourselves and others. Its goal is to promote respect, inclusion, and understanding while reducing the impact of harmful stereotypes. It also aims to provide practical tools for using words in a more conscious and responsible way.

Speakers at the Rome event included Aurora Caporossi, Valentina Dallari, Valeria Galfano, Daniele Di Pauli, Claudia Margineanu, Riccardo Dalle Grave, Francesca Dominici, Edoardo Mociniy Lara Lago, with Maruska Albertazzi moderating.

Through this project, organisers hope to remind everyone that words have power — and that respect starts with how we choose to speak.
