Earlier in October, ECPO Patient Council member James Fullan was invited to speak to third-year psychology students at Liverpool University. The session was organised by Professors Emma Boyland and Charlotte Hardman, who work closely with students to build understanding around health, behaviour, and the lived experience of people affected by obesity
James shared his personal story of living with obesity and spoke about the importance of empathy, understanding, and communication in healthcare. His key message focused on how the first interaction with a person living with obesity can have a lasting impact, and how using people-first language helps to create meaningful and respectful conversations.
Speaking after the session, James said it was “a fantastic opportunity to share my experience and highlight how small changes in communication can make a real difference.” He also expressed his gratitude to everyone at ECPO for giving him the confidence to speak openly and help educate future healthcare professionals.
ECPO is proud to see members like James using their lived experience to inspire others and help shape a more compassionate and informed approach to obesity care.
