On October 7, 2024, James Fullan, our patient representative from England, UK, gave a powerful presentation on his lived experience with obesity to third-year psychology undergraduates at Liverpool University. Invited by Professor Charlotte Hardman, James initially felt apprehensive, but saw it as a valuable opportunity to advocate for the use of people-first language in patient interactions.
During the talk, James took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of empathy and compassion in medical conversations, urging future professionals to ensure that patient interactions are inclusive and respectful. Reflecting on past experiences where patients were often “spoken at,” James aimed to inspire a shift in how healthcare professionals communicate with individuals living with obesity.
The lecture was well-received, with students and professors alike appreciating James’ insights. Professors Charlotte Hardman and Emma Boyland provided support, and students stayed after the talk to ask questions, expressing interest in ECPO and Obesity UK.
Ken Clare was credited for encouraging him to use visual aids in his presentation, which enhanced the audience’s understanding. He extended gratitude to the ECPO Family for their ongoing support and guidance, which helped him deliver his impactful message.
Through this presentation, James hopes to create lasting change in how healthcare professionals approach obesity, ensuring more compassionate and meaningful interactions in the future.
