A United Front Against Weight Stigma: Reflections from the International Weight Stigma Conference in Oslo

ECPO was recently represented at the 12th Annual Weight Stigma Conference in Oslo. The conference brought together activists, researchers, and organizations for vital conversations on intersectionality, solutions, and how to move the dialogue forward. The event provided an opportunity for deep reflection on how different perspectives enrich and strengthen our collective fight against systemic weight bias.
Two Sides of the Same Coin
While weight stigma affects many, the conversation is often approached from two complementary viewpoints:
  • The Rights & Diversity Perspective: Focusing on bodily autonomy, dignity, and resisting the automatic pathologization of larger bodies.
  • The Patient & Healthcare Perspective: Focusing on the right to evidence-based medical care and scientific recognition of a real health condition.
Although the starting points differ, individuals across the entire community face the exact same daily barriers, microaggressions, and systemic biases.
Building Bridges: Biology Over Kilograms
To create a healthcare system that truly embraces everyone, we must shift the conversation away from weight and toward biology and metabolism. When we define obesity as a complex metabolic dysfunction, we unite our collective efforts:
  • We erase blame: Metabolic health is driven by complex biological processes, not moral failure or a lack of willpower.
  • We decouple size from health: Larger bodies can be metabolically healthy, and smaller bodies can experience metabolic dysfunction. Size alone never tells the full story.
  • We align our goals: We can fiercely fight weight discrimination while simultaneously demanding high-quality, stigma-free medical support for those who need it.
These goals are not contradictions; they are two sides of the same important coin. The fight for an evidence-based and stigma-free healthcare system grows stronger when we acknowledge and validate both needs.
Transforming Healthcare Through European Collaboration
This systemic shift is already underway. ECPO is proud to bring the patient voice directly into groundbreaking international research under the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) umbrella.
Through major EU-funded projects like #UNIFIED and #CAREPATH, we are actively working to reshape healthcare delivery. By putting stigma reduction at the absolute core of research and treatment design, we ensure that future healthcare is driven by cellular biology and human dignity—not the scale.
By standing together and embracing every nuance, we can build a society that stops judging people by their shape, and a healthcare system that treats every individual with science, empathy, and respect.
