It is with profound sorrow that we heard recently of the passing of our good friend, Christina Fleetwood.
Christina was already a celebrated disability rights campaigner and academic when we met her. During her time with us, first with the patient’s council and second as ECPO, she campaigned tirelessly for the causes she strongly believed in.
She was one of the founding members of the patient’s council and one of the early leaders who set us on the right road towards independence as ECPO.
Christina’s area of excellence was around weight stigma. She has left a real legacy through the work she started with us, and this work has been recently recognised by the inaugural “Christina Fleetwood Award for outstanding work in Weight Stigma.”
We were delighted to present this at the 30th European Congress on Obesity in Dublin this year.
As a group, we were blessed to know Christina for a short part of her working life. We are confident her legacy stretches longer than her time at ECPO.
“All members, past and present, of our patients council, executive team, and the board will have their own wonderful memories of working with Christina.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her devoted, loving husband, David, at this difficult time.”
Ken Clare,
Chair of ECPO Board of Directors.
“Our beloved Christina Fleetwood has left us, but her loving presence will endure forever in our hearts and souls. We will keep the memory of our dear Christina alive by cherishing the moments we spent together and remembering her legacy and the amazing work she has left behind.
You were a great advocate for us all living with Obesity.
Rest in peace, our dear friend.”
Solveig Sigurdardottir, ECPO President
“Christina was a pioneer. A trailblazer. An Advocate, academic, and someone with rich personal experience and insight. Most of all, she was a warm, empathetic individual with genuine passion. I will miss conversing with her; my thoughts are with her husband, David, at this time.”
