The Icelandic association for the study of Obesity have collaborated with the EASO ECPO on the following recommendations, which have also been supported by the President of the ECPO, Sólveig Sigurðardóttir.
Due to the pandemic Covid 19 disease, The Association for the study of obesity Iceland (FFO) and The European Coalition for People living with Obesity (ECPO) want to issue the following recommendations for people living with obesity:
Studies and experiences of those who have treated individuals with Covid infections, indicate that individuals with obesity are at greater risk of becoming seriously ill if they contract the new coronavirus that causes Covid 19. It is not fully known why however there are several theories which suggest the immune response of those with obesity is different. In part, the increased risk may be associated with obesity, Diabetes mellitus 2, cardiovascular disease and various lung diseases.
However, severe obesity also appears to be an independent risk factor for more severe illnesses such as hospital admissions and intensive care. Therefore, we would like to encourage individuals with severe obesity and complications to take appropriate precautions until the cure / vaccine is found.
In times like these, it is important to pay close attention to the body and its well-being. Hence, quality sleep plays a key role. Sleep and healthy eating are vital in maintaining the best immune system. Daily exercise will also help mental health. We want to encourage those with obesity to keep in good contact with their doctors and to take advantage of the opportunities due to this change in society, to maintain and practice good living.
The Director of Health in Iceland and the Epidemiologist of Iceland, are working on more detailed instructions for those at risk of becoming ill by Covid 19. We advise everyone to familiarise themselves with the issue.
