Natasja Wijling, a patient representative from the European Coalition for People Living with Obesity (ECPO), delivered an impactful workshop on obesity and stigma during a recent congress focused on vascular diseases and diabetes. The event was attended by general practitioners, nurse practitioners, general practice assistants, and lifestyle coaches.
Natasja’s workshop addressed the harmful effects of weight stigma in healthcare settings and the importance of empathetic, patient-centered care. In addition to the workshop, she shared her personal experiences of living with obesity, providing the audience with valuable insights into the challenges faced by individuals in similar circumstances.
Her message was clear: healthcare professionals must approach obesity with empathy, understanding, and respect, ensuring that stigma does not interfere with effective care. This approach is vital for fostering a supportive environment for patients dealing with obesity, vascular diseases, and diabetes.
The event provided an opportunity for healthcare professionals to reflect on their practices and commit to reducing weight bias in their interactions with patients.
