Bologna, Italy – June 21, 2025
More than 120 people living with obesity joined forces with 16 healthcare professionals for a powerful and engaging event held at the Sydney Hotel in Bologna, organised by the patient-led association LA MATTINA DOPO odv. The event, led by patient advocate Eligio Linoci, focused on challenging stigma and redefining how society talks about obesity — with an emphasis on the importance of people-first language.
The central theme of the day, “I’m People First,” was inspired by a message developed by the European Coalition for People Living with Obesity (ECPO). Each attendee received a badge and a printed message as a reminder that no one should be defined by their disease. Instead, the focus was placed on human dignity, respect, and the need to view obesity as a chronic condition, not a character flaw.
The event featured a rich discussion between patients and healthcare professionals around the changing landscape of obesity care. Topics included current treatment approaches, the psychological burden of stigma, and the value of compassionate, inclusive language in healthcare settings.
ECPO was also represented visually throughout the venue, with photographs from past events showcasing the organisation’s growing presence and impact across Europe. The images sparked conversation about how shared experiences and international solidarity are helping drive forward more empathetic, patient-led approaches to obesity advocacy.
“The room was filled with connection and understanding,” said Eligio Linoci. “Our goal was to empower people, promote education, and remind everyone that they are not alone — and judging by the conversations and energy, we achieved just that.”
This event marks a meaningful step forward in Italy’s growing patient movement, reaffirming the power of language in shaping attitudes and promoting inclusive care for people living with obesity.
